Monday

Hi,

For today, I am hoping to show some of the play, "Julius Caesar," by the Bard. I have a great 1953 version with Marlon Brando as Mark Antony.

I mentioned this in class, but this will switch around our readings, since I had originally planned to show this on Friday. Also, check the syllabus on the web, I had the wrong page numbers up for the Tocqueville reading up at first.

If anyone is reading this, do the rest of the students like the way this is handled in terms of writing the responses and turning them in? For the assignment i wanted to turn in for this Monday I couldn't find any relevant post to amend it to (opting instead for previous Wednesday's post). Anyone else have any worries about that? It's easy for Dr. Reinhard of course to have every response collected in one area, but it's kind of hard to keep up with what weeks i've turned in assignments for, let alone to which post each assignment is attached to. Just throwing around some ideas.

Also, i'd like for the ability to respond to specific comments, much like a threaded discussion as found on sites like Slashdot or salon. I.e. if a person makes the first statement in a thread, that statement is the "parent" and other readers can submit "children" to that post. If this forum is purely to be used to turn in homework, i'd much rather turn it in at the beginning of class, as it seems that currently no discussion is held, we just post and go on with our day. if the discussion is to happen during class time, then perhaps turning in the homework should as well.

that is a good point.

This system of posting before the class made a lot of sense when I had a smaller class, but with this number of students we have not gotten around to talking about eveything that people write.

I would love to see people respond to other's work. Actually, I had been wondering why people didn't do that, but now after Michael's post it kind of makes sense that people would think this was only for homework assignments.

I like the suggestion about threaded posts. Is there some way to make that possible?

i was just looking around my old blogger account linked from blogspot.com and i can't find anything that allows for a threaded discussion. perhaps, Dr Reinhard, if you allow anyone to post a comment, one would not have to respond to a comment you personally have posted (which of course may or may not have anything to do with the comment itself). of course we can take it upon ourselves to thread discussions. whenever you make a post if you are referring to a previous comment at the very least you can put into quotes the sentence that you are responding to. For example, suppose i were to post a long comment that had a particularly controversial or noticeable statement. if someone wanted to respond to my comment they would put into quotes (or italicize) the part that they are responding to, with reference to the persons name of course (giving credit where credit is due). then just respond. i hate to bring it up, but a millsaps polsci 1000 facebook group might also work. but i have much disdain for social networking sites. they create a situation in which people are forced to become either voyeurs or exhibitionists. and not only that, but you're getting spammed to hell and back with lame ads that are supposedly "custom tailored". *sigh* and i digress.
